Benefits of Mulching
There are many benefits of mulching if it is done properly with other tree care strategies. When mulching the goal is to make the conditions for the tree as close to the native environment as possible. Trees do not do well when surrounded by grass.
Mulching will keep down weed growth, keep the soil and roots cooler in the summer heat, reduce evaporation, and natural mulch will degrade and return nutrients to the soil over time.
Mulching- How to do it properly
Mulch should be 2 to 3 inches deep. It should begin a few inches away from the trunk of the tree and extend it as far as the surrounding landscape will allow. Mulch should not be applied around and up the base of the trunk if it can be avoided. Plastic sheeting is not found in natural environments and should be avoided.
